Vonage
Vonage is a bring-your-own-account telephony provider. Connect your Vonage account and Callable can list, buy and attach numbers on it — your agents answer calls on your own carrier, billed to your own Vonage account.
Use Vonage if you already have numbers there, or if you want its international coverage. If you're starting fresh and don't care whose carrier it is, Telnyx is simpler — you buy a number on the Phone numbers page and it's billed with the rest of your Callable account.
Connecting your account
You need two values from Vonage: an API key and an API secret.
- Sign in to the Vonage dashboard.
- Go to Settings and copy your API key and API secret.
- In Callable, open Integrations, find Vonage, and paste both.
- Save, then press Test connection.
Test connection is worth doing before anything else. It reads your account balance and counts the numbers on it, so a typo in the secret fails immediately with a clear message instead of surfacing later as a call that won't connect.
Getting a number
Once connected, a Vonage tab appears on the Phone numbers page. From there you can:
- Import — any number already on your Vonage account shows up ready to attach.
- Buy — search Vonage's inventory by country and purchase. The charge goes to your Vonage balance, not your Callable credits.
Attaching an agent
Attaching works slightly differently on Vonage than on other providers, though you don't have to do anything extra.
Vonage numbers don't point at a URL the way Twilio's do — they point at a Vonage Application. When you attach an agent, Callable creates an application called "Callable" on your account (or reuses it if it's already there) and links the number to it. You'll see that application appear in your Vonage dashboard; leave it alone, it's how calls reach us.
Callable then sets the number on the agent, which is what makes inbound calls route: a call is matched to an agent by the number that was dialled. If you ever change an agent's phone number by hand, make sure it still matches the Vonage number, or calls to it will answer "this number isn't connected to an assistant yet".
Billing
Two separate bills, and it's worth being clear which is which:
- Vonage bills you for the number rental and the per-minute carrier cost. That's between you and Vonage.
- Callable bills you in credits for the agent's usage on the call — the AI, speech-to-text and text-to-speech. Same rate as any other call.
Troubleshooting
"Vonage not connected" — the API key or secret isn't saved. Reconnect under Integrations.
A bought number doesn't appear — Vonage occasionally takes a moment to make a new number visible on the account. Reload the Phone numbers page.
The number rings but nobody answers — almost always the agent's phone number doesn't match the number dialled. Open the agent and check it, including the country code.
Nothing happens at all — re-attach the number. That refreshes the Vonage application's webhooks, which is the usual fix if the number was previously pointed somewhere else.
